I was working as an intern in a Rehabilitation Center for special individuals during my Bachelor's. Working with the individuals having special needs brought a lot of challenges and opportunities too. The people I worked with were in their Adolescence, Early and Middle adulthood. Somewhere in my mind I knew that my work will positively impact and help each individual to grow, gain skills and help them work independently.
As an intern I also faced different challenges. It was not easy to see self injurious behavior and sometimes I used to get hurt by them as well, but my patience helped me to withstand it and continue to work with individuals having Autism, Intellectual disability, ADHD, Learning disability and Cerebral Palsy.
One day I was assigned a child and had to plan all his activities for the day. It was difficult at the beginning as he was a slow learner. I planned a complex activity for him as he was good at his fine motor skills. So I planned a photo frame making activity. At the beginning it was difficult for him but after 8-9 attempts he was successfully able to do it. Going back to these memories gives me a goal to serve a greater purpose. At the end of the internship, seeing some progress and positive changes in the individuals gave me a feeling of happiness and made everything worthy.
