Yes, it’s worth working with children and satisfactory too, but it is not just a statement, it’s something that you realize after actually working with these tiny tots. My moment of realization was pretty cute.
It was Gurupornima (teacher's day in India) just within a month after I started working with preschool children. The most sacred day in any teacher’s life, and I was not even fully qualified to be called a teacher. I was just a trainee in an experimental school on our college campus which had reopened after 19 years. Pretty mind boggling huh!
So on that day, as a college student we were wishing our professors and there comes this little fella from my class, the youngest one of all. He gave me a wonderful handmade flower and said “Happy Gurupornima,” in his babbling voice. It was such a sweet gesture that I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day. At that moment I realized that I was his first teacher and he was my very first student. This made me feel special. I was acknowledged as a teacher and at that instant I felt grateful for what I do. I was going to make his foundational years’ worth it and I decided that if this is going to be my reward, then there is no other job that will make me happier. I wouldn’t be able to buy this happiness even with money. This was my “worth it” moment when I realized that this is what I want to continue doing.
